Appropriate Age: This webquest was designed for students in middle and high school. It could be adapted for any grade. Depending on which course and at what age level you are working with there can be different expectations of the quality of work and grading procedures.
Learning Goals: Students should learn after completing this webquest several different things. They should have a greater understanding of the basic ancient civilizations, including the one which they specialized in their studies. They should understand the concept of developing a civilization and what is needed in order to endure. They should be comfortable with presenting this information to small groups and how to formulate a report. And lastly how to use their creative minds to create a their diorama and develop their creative piece of literature.
Time Required: Students will need enough time to gather information off the computers to put together this project. Again depending on what age group this is flexible. Students will probably need more time taking notes and getting information if they are new to the process. The ideal time frame would be to spend about one to two weeks total for the whole project. The first week or half week should be computer time used for research and the second half for creating the diorama and writing report. The next few days should be filled with the groups presenting their projects and the last day should be a walk through time for the whole class to see everyone’s project.
Skills Required: Students must have some basic computer knowledge and skills to be able to find their way around the internet and word processing programs. Students must have some organizational skills when looking up information and taking notes. They should be able to take enough notes to later write up a report. Students should be confident enough to write a report and share with their group.
Materials Required: Students should have access to computers at school. All of the research should also be done in class, however if students want to further research they can do this at home. To create the dioramas students should bring in their own shoebox and any extra craft materials that aren’t already provided in class.
Grading Rubric: Students will be graded based on a number scale. The entire project will be out of 100 points. The students will have the opportunity to evaluate themselves then a teacher evaluation will be done as well. The student evaluation is done to open up the students’ eyes to see how well they really think they did and for the teacher to understand how students think the quality of their work should be graded.
It is also highly recommended that you go over some basic copyright rules with your students before and during this project. Here are some helpful links: http://www.stfrancis.edu/cid/copyrightbay/ (Interactive) http://www.copyrightkids.org (great site for students) |
